About the Project

The Erleigh / Earle Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Erleigh / Earle name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Erleigh / Earle surname.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Erleigh's), by time period (18th Century Erleigh's), or by topic (Erleigh DNA, Erleigh Occupations, Erleigh Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Related Surnames and Variants

Below are the main variations of the Erleigh Surname.

Regarding Parish Records and Name Mis-spelling or Variations:

In parish church records the spelling of names was not standardized. Many people didn't read or write (much less spell), and sometimes they didn't even know how to spell their own name. While the clergymen were more literate than most people they tended to spell people's names phonetically as they heard them (or they spelled them in latin). This resulted in many English names being misspelled in the Church records.

The name Erleigh which later became Earle (pronounced Er-lee or Er-lay) was mis-spelled in many ways.

Variations in historical documents:

Norman (French) Era Nomenclature: de Erleigh, de Erlegh, de Erleia, d’Erley, de Erle, de Erlee, de Derley, de Herlegh, de Arle, d’Arley
Post Norman (French) Era: Eryll, Erlye, Earlle, Erlie, Erlee, Erleye, Ernle, Erie, Earlle, Derley, Darell, Derle, Serle, Gerle, Arle, Arleye, Arneleye, Arlay, Herel, Herlegh, Harle, Harlee, Harleye, Herleye, Earley

Earle Male Y-DNA Project

We are looking for Earle males who have either already taken a Y-DNA test or would like to take one.

Y-DNA can help determine which Earle lines are related and how. This can be huge in determining relationships between the various Earle lines.

I'm interested in helping and learning. My last name is Earl, my family came respectively from Indiana, West Virginia, Massachusetts and then Great Britain. I began working on Ancestry about four years ago; when that became too expensive I converted my notes to FamilySearch. My pet peeve is everyone calling England the United Kingdom, no matter what year they are referencing. My greatest effort is keeping all my notes straight; one effort seems to always lead to another.
